Depending on your perspective, this could either be really good news or a threat to business, but in a blog post last week Uber (the ride-sharing service & app) announced they are expanding their “Uber Freight” service to more U.S. markets than before. This service gives drivers a chance to pick up freight loads which are available and would seemingly most benefit independent owner-operators or “hot shot” drivers the most. The service is trying to expand along what seem to be the msot desireable rooutes for drivers.
In addition, they announced a better matching system for drivers to loads within its app. As drivers use the app to book loads and pick up, the system will learn their preferrences and try to match them with loads. Further, There will be a notification system so drivers don’t miss out on loads they prefer when they become available. It seems to us this might be a boon for certain types of drivers only if they can secure the loads for drivers to pick up. If that is in fact the case then for smaller driver groups, O&O’s and hot shot drivers, this could be a game changer.
